How Can Falls Be Prevented?

How Does Exercise Prevent Falls and who can benefit?
There is now strong evidence that exercise is one of the most effective interventions for preventing falls in older people. Exercise reduces falls risk by addressing multiple key contributors, including:
- Improved balance and postural control
- Increased walking speed and gait stability
- Greater lower-limb and core muscle strength
- Faster reaction time
- Improvements in cognitive function, mood, and confidence
By targeting both physical and psychological risk factors, exercise helps older adults move more safely and confidently in their daily environments.
Exercise should ideally be prescribed and progressed by a qualified health professional to ensure safety while providing adequate challenge and functional strength development.
Group-based strength and balance classes offer professional supervision and social connection, while home-based programs can also be effective when appropriately designed.
For frailer older adults, or those with complex medical conditions, the benefits of exercise are less certain unless programs are delivered by clinicians with specific expertise, such as Physiotherapists and Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs). In these cases, multifaceted, team-based interventions may be required.
Falls prevention programs are suitable for:

- People with a history of falls
- Individuals with balance concerns or unsteadiness
- Those living with chronic conditions
- People returning to activity after illness or hospitalisation
Programs can be delivered one-on-one or in small groups, and in clinical, community, home-based, or telehealth settings.
